Edgmont Township is in Delaware County with its northern part bordering Chester County. Crum Creek borders the eastern side of the township. It is 28.9 miles west of Philadelphia. History of Edgmont

Dating back to 1686, Edgmont was originally called Gilead. The name Edgmont derives from the Royal Manor of Edgmond on Shropshire, England, and was founded by the Baker family. It was adopted in 1687, and early documents show different spellings of the township: Edgemont, Edgmond, and Edgemond. The town settled on Edgmont in the 19th century.

The Lenni Lenape Indians inhabited the area of Edgmont. The colonists who made Edgmont their home used a grid of Native American trails as a means of travel. Inns were built along these trails, the most notable were the Brick House on Middletown Road, the Gradyville Inn on Middletown Road, and the Edgmont Inn on West Chester Pike. As for transportation, in 1848, wooden rails for a horse-car line were placed on what is now West Chester Pike by the West Chester Turnpike Company. They were replaced with trolley cars, which brought people from Philadelphia out to Castle Rock in Edgmont. In 1899, Castle Rock was at its height with picnic areas on Crum Creek. There were also cabins, arts and crafts, cottages, and a mess hall. Sadly, this early-style amusement park was sold to a developer in 1963.
